[–]TripleWDotMTL – NHL 31 points 6 days ago This kid is doing all the right things. Can’t wait for the Coyotes to become a real threat in the pacific. [–]ragtime94NYR – NHL 12 points 6 days ago* what a great guy. hate to have lost Duclair but their bromance is easily one of the best in the league [–]hockey2016 13 points 5 days ago Guys, Max is a type 1 diabetic and he plays professional hockey. That’s some incredible shit right there. Type 1 is dangerous and a lot of people that have it get cataract surgery early in life – ever since I found out about his condition I have wondered if he has synthetic lenses and how it affects his game. I had mine done this past year and while I see much better, it’s nowhere near where my real lenses were when I was younger and cataract free. [–]DendariaDraeneiPIT – NHL 3 points 5 days ago Cataract development is unusual before 20 years of disease (though not unknown) and can be delayed through very strict regulation of blood sugar. IIRC Domi was diagnosed at 12 or 13 and has been carefully monitored and treated since then, so I would be surprised to see any cataract before the age of 35. I’m still amazed that he can play professionally when there is such a huge variation in his activity levels between rest days and game days, but it’s great to see him being such a good ambassador and encouraging people with diabetes to live healthy and active lives. [–]Olapse I have had type 1 diabetes since i was 6. I am now 21, and have played at a high level of hockey for the last 5+ years. And have been playing hockey since i was 7 as a goalie. While it does get in the way at times, it is not a huge problem, as i have been living with it for so many years, it has become my normal. Max has had it since he was 12, so i assume he just dosnt even notice it anymore, and it has become second nature for him (like it has for me). I love the guy and am happy he is helping out all of us alike. P.s. just adding some insight 😉 [–]ItsthellamaWSH – NHL 9 points 5 days ago My favorite non capital player by a mile. As a type 1 diabetic myself, huge inspiration to see him achieve all he is achieving. Hope he wins a cup (after we do of course). –]Berbaw06DET – NHL 4 points 5 days ago Heard that man. I’m type 1 too and really look up to the guy. Bobby Clarke is (was? Hopefully is) also type 1. Same with Cory Conacher. I’m sure there’s some other big names I’m forgetting right now, but it’s super cool that a star like Bobby Clarke and potential star like Domi can do so much with the disease. [–]ItsthellamaWSH – NHL 1 point 5 days ago I agree. Always nice to see someone that faces the same struggles as us do so much. [–]shittybillzEDM – NHL 17 points 6 days ago The NHL didnt feel right without a Domi being in it. Glad Max is becoming such a well known player throughout the league, and good for him for supporting this cause. [–]master_swaggins 3 points 6 days ago Especially becoming well known for positive reasons [–]ChumChumMoodyDoody 5 points 5 days ago Quickly becoming my favorite player behind Doan. [–]noroadsleftANA – NHL 5 points 5 days ago Great hockey player and a good young man, too. As a Type 1 diabetic myself I would be thrilled to see him succeed in the league and have a long career. But something from the article stuck out to me: Domi is sharing his story to help others live comfortably with diabetes, which affects more than 11 million Canadians. Canada’s population is about 36 million. So are 30% of Canadians diabetic? Or are they talking about people with the disease plus those who care for them? Because the idea of 30% of Canada’s population being diabetic is pretty harrowing. [–]CanadianMaelstromDET – NHL 3 points 5 days ago Canada has around 3million diabetics and 5.7 with prediabetes. We rank near the bottom in the OECD for % of population with or at risk of diabetes [–]Berbaw06DET – NHL 1 point 5 days ago Maybe not type 1, but diabetic in general wouldn’t be too far out of the question. Still seems pretty high though. [–]noroadsleftANA – NHL 1 point 5 days ago For sure, I wouldn’t expect all of those to be Type 1 (I think the statistics say about 10-15% of diabetes cases worldwide are Type 1), but for that large a portion of people to be diabetic period is scary. [–]Udder_factsOshawa Generals – OHL 1 point 5 days ago I believe affects in this context means the person with diabetes and those who are close to them like family. [–]97EchoEchoARI – NHL 3 points 5 days ago How long until the league learns of Max’s alter Ego? [–]lesstat -1 points 6 days ago Please play for the Maple Leafs someday……… pretty please…… [–]hadronwulfARI – NHL 5 points 6 days ago I think we’d be willing to negotiate… peaks fingers like Mr. Burns [–]LoneWolfComandoARI – NHL 7 points 6 days ago No. [–]hadronwulfARI – NHL 7 points 6 days ago* Hey, don’t be too hasty. I’ll give them Domi for Matthews, Marner, Rielly, and JVR with salary retention on the last three and two first round picks. [–]LoneWolfComandoARI – NHL 2 points 6 days ago Nope! [–]goodnewsjimdotcomPIT – NHL 2 points 5 days ago Spoken like a true fan. I’m the same way with Malkin. I don’t care how much you want to fleece yourself, we don’t want to lose Geno.
